I have had issues in finding sneakers in the past. I am not a pro runner or even a hobbyist. I walk/jog for exercise. As such, I never really considering searching for a shoe that’s recommended by Runner’s World or using a proper fit guide. My experience has been walking into Foot Locker and walking out with a pair of shoes. I’ve always had sore, achey, throbbing feet from shoes that make walking/jogging very uncomfortable and a lot of the time the discomfort would deter me from even going out for a jog.

So, I decided to use the guide for a proper fit and found out 3 things:
1) I strike with the ball of my foot first (due to an old knee injury, its the only way I CAN run without it hurting too much).
2) I have medium to high arches
3) I like a large toe box because I hate the feeling of being cramped and pinched around my toes (despite having narrowish feet)

The guide recommended these sneakers, so I decided to purchase them. I went with the Black/Light Onix.
Fit: I usually wear a 5.5 women’s, but I tend to go with a 6 as I tightness around my feet to be very uncomfortable. I found the XR Mission to be a perfect fit for someone that is between a 5.5 and 6.
Quality: the materials are fantastic, it’s light and breathable, and the draw string is PERFECT. It provides enough tightness and support as a lace, without the hassle.
Color: Great color selection for those that like the wild and crazy typical running shoe colors and more conservative colors for those that don’t want to scream.
Comfort: I have never worn a more comfortable shoe in my life. I put them on and it instantly made me want to go for a run, it was that comfortable to me. I felt support in my arch, heel, and toe areas that made my jog very enjoyable. My feet did not feel sore and achey after my jog either, which is a very new feeling.

Overall, I would recommend these shoes to anyone with a medium to high arch. Fantastic sneakers. I love them so much, I have already bought a second pair the same day that I received them.

As an added bonus: price was fantastic compared to other shoes. It’s easy spend upwards of $125 for sneakers these days, even the commercial “crap” like Nike and Adidas. So, for $71…I could not have made a better purchase. My feet are happy!

I loved the look and design of these shoes so I read the buyer reviews. I wanted these for casual street wear but the reviews were mostly from hard core trail runners, mudders and other people who can probably kick a grizzly bear’s ass. Since I had no intention of running the Paris-Dakar Rally on foot I wasn’t sure if these weren’t “too much” shoe for me. I mean, look at that action figure lacing system, and my tires have less aggressive tread than this shoe, the little colored words on the sides made me think of sponsor labels on a top fuel dragster. I began to wonder if I was worthy of this shoe. Would real athletes call me out as an imposter? A Poser? Would normal people look at my feet and assume I was a dork? (really, my shoes are the least likely cause of this).
So, still feeling inadequate for these shoes I placed my order. They arrived 3 days later (probably ran half of the trip on their own) and I got them out and tried them on.
Ugh. Too tight! But only at first. After ten minutes they loosened to a snug fit. After two days they fit perfect. No kidding – perfect. I love the feel of them. They are comfortable as all get out. I almost climbed a hill in them just for the joy of it.
They feel like they will last forever. It’s almost like they are bulletproof. In fact, if a thug ever shoots me I hope he aims for my feet. I’m confident these shoes will protect me.
The lace system seems odd at first but after a few times I figured it out so I can do it without taking my eyes off the TV. It’s tricky at first but if that thug tries to take them off of you he will be stymied by the lace system long enough for you to run away up a nearby mountain… another plus.
The style is fantastic. So many people like my feet now. I catch people looking at my feet, nodding at my feet while nudging their friends, smiling at my feet. These shoes made my feet more popular than my head.
They do get hot. Not hot, but warm. I always went for mesh sided shoes before…light and airy. These are like armor compared to those and the trade off is a bit of trapped heat. Nothing too terrible but dark blue on a 90 degree day in the sun is a bit warm. I suppose if I wore them for what they were made for I could cool them by running across a glacier or alpine stream. Instead I prop them in front of my ac vents. But really, it’s a minor thing since I live in Ohio and we only have weather that nice on accident. I’m sure I will appreciate that heat trapping during the other 320 or so odd days of usual cool and wet Ohio weather. (Ohio sucks by the way…unless you’re a mudder)
The description says water resistant. I think they are. I was on a soccer field after a rain (hosting a Jr. Olympics competition, not actually playing soccer) and the wet grass did not soak my feet. I got some very minor dampness towards the end but my last pair of shoes would have sloshing water bags after ten steps so these were great. Plus the snug collar kept the grass clippings from getting into my shoes and turning my socks into rattan mats by the end of the day.
While the treads are excellent for quick cuts in turf or dirt they can be a bit slick on smooth wet surfaces. It’s not banana peel type slick but just that little bit of slide that makes me think “whew! glad I was not running from that thug on this stuff).
In the reviews people talk about the longevity of this shoe in terms of miles or, in some cases, races. Now I don’t know how many miles I wear my shoes (or if races to the restroom count) but I fully expect these shoes to last much longer than my previous pairs of shoes. They seem like someone actually designed them to work and last rather than just adding pretty swooshes or springs of shocks on a mediocre pair of nylon/leather sacks and called them shoes. I think these were designed by someone who got fed up with the garbage the big names put out.
I wore these to the zoo last week and climbed a pretty high hill in them. Granted, I was in a tram on the way up and on a wooden switchback walkway on the way down but I felt like I could outrun the other people if I had to. The important part was that my feet were comfortable. I did not think about them at all…except when other people stared or pointed at them.
So, do these shoes work for a fit, non-racing ordinary 46 year old male like myself? Of course they do. They are comfortable, durable and, I am assuming, thug proof. Plus they have the added benefit of making me look like I am a crazy trail runner…a very careful and clean one, but maybe they will think I am on the way to my first race.
Buy these shoes if you even remotely like them. Just don’t look at them too many times on Amazon. I swear the prices go up after about 20 visits to the page..

***** Next chapter*****
Ok. I just recently ordered my second pair of these. My little toe wore a hole in the side of my first pair. To be fair, it took a full year for that little piggy to burrow through that material. And even so, he only got to see a little daylight, there was no full blown escape. The soles on that first pair were worn down and thin enough that if I stepped on a dime I could tell you the year. This is not a complaint. I did not take it easy on these shoes at all. I pushed them as hard as a semi-fit but active middle aged man could. ( dang, I just called myself middle aged and felt it was accurate.) I didn’t run any races, I didn’t climb any gravel quarry trails but I hit a lot of asphalt and concrete. These shoes held up beautifully. They even looked good enough to wear out in public right up until that piggy broke out. Now they will be my lawn mowing shoes, and probably car washing shoes, and also my kayaking shoes. (kayaking sounds pretty bada$$, right? please say yes.)
The new pair is grey. Old pair was blue. They look great with jeans, And believe it or not, still draw envious looks from strangers. I was just at a resort in San Antonio Texas last week and the valets at the entrance checked them out as I walked in. Finally they asked what kind of shoe I was wearing. I had to model them for them right in the foyer. I would have climbed a pillar for them to show their awesome ability but didn’t want to show off….and get kicked out at the same time. I got a lot of looks on Riverwalk downtown too…but that might have been because I was wearing shorts and showing my blindingly white Ohio winter skin.
Again, I would recommend these shoes to anyone. They are the best shoe I ever wore.

I thru hiked the Appalachian Trail in 2014 with these shoes. I did use 4 pair on the hike as I typically have foot problems so I kept good quality shoes at all times. I sent the used pairs home and still have them. I have tried many brands and like the Salomon’s the best. I do wish they would last longer, but I am also very hard on them. I still own 3 other brands, but the Salomons are certainly my favorites. This is probably the 8th pair of the XA 3Ds that I have purchased over the years.

I sweat a lot and these shoes breath very well. I am not a fan of waterproof shoes since they tend to hold in the heat and do not dry as well when they do get wet. On the AT last summer I did a lot of hiking in wet conditions including walking through the rivers in Maine. These shoes dried very quickly. They have good traction on the rocks as well. This summer I am headed to Spain to walk the Camino, these are the shoes I will be
wearing.

Testimonial:

The shoe feels and looks like it is constructed with quality material. I love the bright colors. At first I wasn’t sure what to think about the laces. since it was different- not the traditional tie that I am use to. However, I realize now that it works great- I don’t have to worry about re-tying, and it feels secure.

I run and walk in them and they feel very comfortable, stiffer and a little bulkier than a regular running shoe, but my feet feel supported and comfortable. I have to remember this is a TRAIL shoe- so it’s meant to be a little more rigid. Happy that it doesn’t feel frumpy and it looks cool too!

Note of Caution:
I did have to go down half a size. I wear 7s- I ordered 7s and the toe box felt huge. I lined it up with my other size 7 running shoes and it was significantly longer. I went to a local store to try on a half size smaller just to compare and going down a half size fit me best. The sales associate also told me that these run large. Amazon’s exchange policy and experience was very smooth!

Other than that I am pleased with the product and would highly recommend!

This is the first pair of shoes that I have ever bought that were amazing right out of the box. I have been running and trail running for years. I have been professionally fitted for shoes several times and none of them have felt a perfect as these. I did a 3 mile trail run with these on day two with them and really loved the way the gripped the ground. The tread on the bottom looks almost like cleats, but it is so different. The spacing in the tread keeps dirt, mud, pebbles and other stuff from sticking to the bottom, so you don’t lose any traction. It is genius. The support is right on spot. I run with a mild pronated gait and the stabilization in these works just perfect and the arch support is not too high, but noticeable. They hug my heels without feeling restrictive. The toe box is roomy, but still snug feeling. A narrow foot might find them a little big. After 3 miles, my toe were not tingling like a lot of first runs with new shoes.

I love the laces! They are quick and easy to use and there is a little pocket in the top of the tongue to put them in so they aren’t bouncing around, which I love not having to weave them under the crossed laces or into the side of my shoe. See my pictures, no weaving class before purchase necessary. 🙂

This shoe is very nice looking. The loud colors put me off for a while, but I was surprised at just how good this shoe looks on. It doesn’t make me look pigeon toed or like I am always standing in 1st position. I have received many compliments already. I couldn’t find these locally, so most people to comment on them had not even heard of the brand, but thought they were super nice looking. (jealous much)

The actual quality of this shoe seems to be a 10. No weird, dried glue oozing out from anywhere and the sewn seams are all perfect. No loose strings sticking out. I will revise this review if I find the quality anything less than stellar. For now, I am impressed.

Ok, the real truth on sizing. Do not expect to wear your regular size. Use Salomon’s guide for getting the correct size. If you aren’t feeling like measuring your feet and cross checking on their chart, Order AT LEAST ½ a size smaller than what you normally wear. All the reviews stating the same are completely correct. I usually wear between an 8.5 and a 9 in running shoes. I ordered an 8 and still have wiggle room for my toes. THESE run BIG. I would hate for you to order and return these great shoes because of the fit.

So, wrapping this up, they look awesome, they feel good on, love the laces (no weaving class needed,) support is on point, grip on the trails is fan-freaking-tastic, THEY RUN BIG and would 100% be my zombie apocalypse choice of footwear.

After buying a $120 pair of shoes in person and finding them to be uncomfortable after 10 minutes of wear, I turned to Amazon to find a better option. The price was so great on these that I ordered two pairs in different colors. Reviews that I read said to order down. I normally wear a size 9, so I ordered this pair in a size 8.5. They fit perfectly! I love the quicklace single-pull lacing system, because I don’t have to worry about double knotting to keep my laces tied throughout the day. I love the colors and I get lots of compliments on them. I wear these to work, to workout, and while running errands, and they’re always comfortable. I ordered these Salomon Women’s X Scream W Trail Running Shoe,Dark Cloud/Light Onix/Orange Feeling,9 M US just in case, and they do fit a little large. I kept them anyway because they were comfortable.

Testimonial:

I already own the Salomon Quest 4d light hikers, and I bought those because they were one of the few shoes out there that fit my foot type. My foot is wide in the toe box, thin in the forefoot, and thin in the heel. Also, my foot is thin in girth – think ducks foot but not yellow! If your toe box is wide AND squared, these Mission XR’s MIGHT be a problem as there is narrowing at the top of the shoe. My type of foot is hard to fit, and finding shoes is always tough. If your foot is like mine, read on!

If you have a thick arch, or thick forefoot, these shoes may be an issue as other reviewers may have noted. Also note that these shoes are not ideal for putting inserts in, you will probably have to live with the stock footbed. Again, like the Quest 4d’s, there is not much “wiggle” room for adding inserts without changing the fit. YMMV, especially if you have thin inserts… but that is my experience, take it for what it is worth!!

Because the Quest 4d fit so well, over the last couple of years I have been periodically trying on other Salomon shoes hoping for the same cut / last, but to no avail – many of the Salomon trail runners were just too narrow in the toe box. Then I came upon the XR Mission – and the fit / shape was similar to the Quest 4d! Alas, a trail runner that was conducive to my foot type! I tried them on at REI, and then bought them here on Amazon due to the great price!

It seems like a well made shoe, I have always been happy with Salomon products – but time will tell how this particular shoe holds up. This is the first experience I have had with these thin / pull up laces, I am curious to see how durable these are as well.

Overall, I like the shoe, seems well made and the fact it is cut to my foot type only makes it better! Five stars!

I hope this review helps, and that describing my foot type will give you an idea of how these fit.

Happy reading!

I did quite a bit of research on these shoes before I purchased. I read reviews on line and and on Amazon because the sizing seemed to change from my everyday size. First, I never knew to get one size up in a running shoe. I wear an 8 and I always purchased an 8. Reading about Salomon it seemed that most of their shoes you needed a size down, but for this particular shoe a size to a half size up seemed to be the best option. I ordered an 8.5 and it fits absolutely perfect! So glad I listened to the Amazon reviews before me. I have extraordinarily flat feet, enough to where my ankles turn in when I walk. I tried a pair of Salomons on at work and found that the arch didn’t feel too high. The arch is there but it’s not enough to hurt the side of my foot.
I have had these for about a week and I LOVE them. They are so comfortable and I get tons of compliments on the color.
-The shoe in general seems well built. I run on the road and on trails and have found they work on both
-The “laces” without laces are amazing. No worrying about tying your shoe. Just cinch to where you want it then tuck the cord in the tongue (it has a built in pocket)
– There are no areas that rub on my feet. I wear ankle socks and I can’t feel anything hit or give me blisters
-All of the colors are so fun.

I will update my review as I continue to run in them, but for now I can say that they are my favorite running shoe that I have owned. I have 3 pairs of Nike running shoes that don’t come close to these. I would recommend getting a half size up for sure.

Salomon Women’s Fellraiser W Trail Running ShoeSalomon Women's Fellraiser W Trail Running Shoe

Testimonial:

First of all, Salomon has its own special sizing system. I would suggest for you to go to the website and follow their sizing chart. Even then, I had a little hiccup and that’s because I didn’t follow their instructions that well. My foot is 9.5″ without socks. I usually buy 10.5 on Brooks shoes just to give me the extra cushion. Hence, I bought a 9.5 on Salomons, thinking that it would give me the extra space I needed. Wrong! They were almost exactly my size, which most trail runners know that we need the extra space for down hill runs. I decided to return them and order a 10. The 10s were exactly what I needed so, I didn’t need to go up to 10.5 like in other shoes. Therefore, be careful who you buy them from. I used Amazon and had absolutely no problems with the exchange.

Now, regarding the shoes again. It’s been raining in California (about time) and the hills I run are muddy and messy. At first, I thought about ordering S-Lab but I figured that the Fellraisers look a lot like the S-Labs. Honestly, these shoes are amazing! I was running down sticky, muddy, watery hills like if I was on dry land! I thought I was gonna fall going downhill on muddy terrain and the fellraisers did not budge. If you check out the pictures of the sole, you will see that it has huge logs on different directions, they do the job excellent. I did not sink or got stuck on the mud, on the contrary, any mud that was could get stuck to the shoes, would fly out as I struck the terrain again. When I got home, I had no mud on my shoes. My mom wears Asics and she had a lot of mud stuck to her shoes and she didn’t even go to the hills with me, she stayed on the pavement. Now, walking or running on pavement on the fellraisers was not a walk in the park (literally). They have almost no cushion so if you have a knee problem and you want to buy these babies, make sure you run on soft terrain or grass. I also ran on grass and it was also nice and soft without any slippery problems. The other problem that I noticed and might be something I need to fix myself is the laces. I guess I have to tight them harder as I felt that they were lose at some moments. I hope this review encourages you to purchase these shoes. I definitely recommend them to anyone running on rough terrain and they are more affordable than the S-LABS.
